لم تكن الدار مثل بقية الأبنية في فاس، فالدار ذات الطابقين متقنة النقوش، محكمة الزخارف، يتوسطها ساحةٌ كبيرة تحوي أصناف الفاكهة، وأربع بركٍ في وسط إحداها رخام، أوقفها السلطان لتكون داراً للمرضى، فجعل فيها الفرش النفيسة من أنواع الصوف والكتان وأنواع الأقمشة بما يزيد عن الوصف ويأتي فوق النعت..
ولم تكن المستشفيات حينها قد انتشرت بطرازها هذا بعد؛ لكن السلطان أبو يعقوب جعل من دار المرضى هذه نبراساً للحضارة الوقفية، ومثالاً يحتذى بالإحسان للمريض؛ حيث جعل فيها قسماً للصيادلة يحضرون فيه الأدهنة والأشربة والأكحال، حتى إذا شفي المريض أُعطي مبلغاً من المال ينفق منه ريثما يستقل…
وعلى الرغم من كثرة انشغال السلطان؛ كان إذا فرغ من صلاته كل جمعة خرج إلى الدار فعاد المرضى فيها، فكان يخرج على الحال التي رأته عليه القافلة، ولم يزل مستمراً على ذاك حتى توفي سنة 595ه.
