عامَ مئةٍ وستّةٍ وثمانينَ للهجرةِ وفي طريقِها إلى أداءِ شعائرِ الحج، وَقَفَتِ الأميرةُ زبيدةُ زوجةُ الخليفةِ العباسي هارونِ الرشيدِ على تجربةٍ لم تكنْ بالسهلة، حرارةُ الأجواءِ على طولِ طريقِ الحجاج، وصهدُ الشمسِ، والماءُ شِبهُ منعدمٍ، ومنظرُ الحُجاجِ في تنقلِهم وتحمُّلِهم العطشَ والجَهدَ كانَ مثيراً بالنسبةِ إليها، وكانَ واضحًا جدًا الحاجةُ إلى المياهِ في تلكَ الرحلةِ الطويلةِ، فقرَّرتْ زبيدةُ حينَها إيجادَ الحلِّ وتوفيرَ المياهِ عنْ طريقِ الوقفِ، كانَ ذلكَ شِبهَ مستحيلٍ في ظِلِّ التضاريسِ الجبليةِ الوَعِرة، فجاءتْ فكرةٌ لمْ يُسبَقْ لها مثيل، إنشاءُ قناةٍ تحملُ الماءَ وتمتدُّ منَ الوادي إلى الكعبةِ.. قناةٌ؟ بهذا الطولِ؟ متـى وكيفَ؟ ثمَّ إنّها ستكلِّفُ ملايين، ردَّتْ زبيدةُ بردِّها الشهير: اِعملْ ولو كلَّفتْ ضربةُ الفأسِ ديناراً، سَخَّرتْ زبيدةُ وقتَها ومالَها وطاقتَها وكلَّ ذَهَبِها لإنشاءِ هذا الوقفِ، كانتْ تجرِبةً فريدةً منْ نوعِها.
بدأَ العملُ.. وبدأتِ الأحجارُ تُرَصُّ حجراً فوقَ آخرَ، وأخذتِ القناةُ في التشكُّلِ متحديةً تضاريسَ الطبيعةِ الصعبةِ والمتعددةِ الجبالِ، هندسةُ القناةِ تعكسُ ذكاءَ صُنّاعِها، تمَّ تثبيتُ مسارِها على أسفلِ الجبلِ حتى تَجمَعَ مياهَ الأمطارِ، وتمَّتْ تغطيتُها لتفادي التبخرِ في موسمِ الصيف، وتمَّ العملُ بإتقانٍ، وامتدّتِ القناةُ إلى ما يفوقُ خمسةً وعشرينَ كيلومتراً، منْ وادي النعمانِ إلى الكعبةِ، وبَعدَ طوِل صبرٍ وعناءٍ تمَّ بإذنِ اللهِ الوقفُ، وشُيِّدتِ القناةُ، التي مازالتْ شاهدًا إلى اليومِ.
كانَ هذا الوقفُ مصدرَ حياةٍ، حيثُ أُخرِجَ الماءُ في طريقٍ طالما كانَ صعباً وشاقاً وأصبحَ مُعبَّدًا وأكثرَ سهولة ويُسرا تاركاً أمامنا مثالاً يحتذى في الكيفية التي من الممكن للوقف أن يغير من خلالها حياة الإنسان نحو الأفضل
