مع كل ميلادِ شمسٍ في سماء دمشق تتراكض القطط في حي القيمرية نحو ساحة المسجد وكأن موعدها مع أبو المعالي قد حان..
كانت تعرف موعدها جيداً وتدرك ان أبو المعالي لن يتأخر عليها يوما، لذلك تركض نحوه إذ يخرج من المسجد وكأنه قدرها الحلو المحتوم..
كان أبو المعالي ناصر الدين أبو الفوارس القيمري أميراً قائداً في جيوش صلاح الدين الأيوبي، سكن دمشق وأسس بها حي القيمريّة..
وكان يلقبه أهل الحيّ ” بالقطّاط” لشدة حبه للقطط، فقد كان يخرج إلى شوارع المدينة حاملاً في يده كيساً به طعامٌ للقطط، فتدرج القطط من كلّ حدب وصوب نحو الرجل، تتحلّق حوله كأنها أقمارٌ صغيرةٌ تدور في فلك هذا الرجل، وكان أبو الفوارس يحنو عليها ويقوم على تطبيبها، حتى بلغ به الأمر أن بنى مسجداً عام 1267 م سمي مسجد القطط، وعمم على أهل دمشق أن من يملك قطة لا يستطيع إطعامها أن يضعها في هذا المسجد حيث تقدم لها الرعاية والطعام..
وبعد ما يقرب من ثمانمئة عامٍ إلا قليلاً لا تزال القطط على ما عوّدها عليه أبو الفوارس رحمه الله، إذ تقف أمام الجامع صباحاً لتنال حظها من الطعام ، ولا يزال أهل الخير يأتون لإطعامها ورعايتها…
وكأن أبو الفوارس إذ بنى هذا المسجد وأوقفه قد أحيا في القلوب ما لا تحييه الخطب العصماء.. وضرب مثلاً للوقف الذي يعم كل المخلوقات بخيره
