على صفحاتِ التاريخِ سطورٌ تروي قِصةَ شبحٍ طالما تربَّصَ بمدينةِ جدةَ، عروسِ البحرِ الأحمر، ومرفأِ الحُجاجِ ومدخلِهِم إلى الأراضي المقدَّسة، إنه هاجسُ العطشِ وقِلَّةُ الماء.
كانتِ الكنداسةُ أحدَ الحلولِ التي ابتدعَها البشرُ للتخلصِ منْ هذا الوحشِ المرعِب، ولِمَنْ لا يعرفُ الكنداسةَ فإنَّها آلةٌ استُخدِمتْ لتحليةِ مياهِ البحرِ وتحويلِها إلى مياهٍ عَذْبةٍ صالحةٍ للشُرب، وهكذا كانتْ هذه الكنداسةُ في وقتٍ منَ الأوقاتِ مصدرَ الماءِ الوحيدَ للمدينةِ، وظلَّتْ كذلكَ حتى تعرَّضتْ لِعَطَلٍ لمْ تُفلِحْ معه كلُ محاولاتِ الإصلاحِ، وعادَ الخوفُ منَ العطشِ يُخيِّمُ بِظلِّهِ الثقيلِ على أرجاءِ المدينةِ، فاجتمعَ الأثرياءُ والوجهاءُ وأسهمُوا بتبرعاتِهِم في شراءِ عينِ ماءٍ لَيَجْلُوا عنَ المدينةِ غُمَّتَها.
وهنا تدخَّل الملك عبدالعزيز رحمه الله و ردَّ التبرعاتِ إلى أصحابِها وتكفَّل بجَلْبِ الماءِ إلى جدَّة، وأمرَ بإنشاءِ وَقْفٍ لجلبِ الماءِ منْ وادي فاطمةَ إلى مدينةِ جدةَ معَ حفرِ الآبارِ وتهيئةِ القنواتِ، وبناءِ المخازنِ على نفقتِه الخاصةِ حتى وفَّرَ الوقفُ الماءَ للمدينةِ بشكلٍ دائمٍ ومتواصلٍ، فكانَ هذا الوقفُ صدقةً جاريةً وهبَ منْ خلالِه الحياةَ لمدينةِ جدةَ وللمسلمينَ الذينَ عادةً ما كانوا يبدؤونَ رحلةَ حجِهِمُ انطلاقاً منها.
